Handel's Messiah
We heard a full, three hour performance of Handel's Messiah in the National Cathedral. We say "full" because the famous "Halleluah Chorus" came just before the second intermission and 1/3 of the people left thereafter. We had bought cheaper tickets that gave us seating on the left side aisle. We took advantage of the departure of so many to help ourselves to better seats. They were better: besides seeing the soloists, which we had previously missed, the high notes carried much better. Over all, it was an outstanding rendition. Photos wern't allowed during the performance, so Gerry took this one just as the chorus was departing. We walked from our apartment in Georgetown to the Cathedral and back, about 2 miles, going uphill on the way there. The people seated next to us were overly impressed upon hearing this. We walked as much as possible up the back streets of Georgetown, emerging only when forced to onto Wisconsin Avenue with its heavy traffic. |
